Las Vegas: What is Our Response?
The tragedy in Las Vegas has weighed heavy on my heart and I have pondered what I can do for the victims and their families. My first response this morning was to ask our God to hold the families of the victims close to Him, to comfort and console them in the aftermath of such evil.
We go about our day focused on our family, activities at home, work and volunteer activities. Fortunately, the evil that lurks in our world is not top of mind with us… until something happens such as the shooting in Las Vegas. What can we do to help change the world around us? As I prayed, Mother Teresa’s quote came to mind: “Not all of us can do great things. But we can do small things with great love.” We can all be a little bit more gentle and kind to family, friends and and strangers. We can be more understanding and accepting of those who do not espouse our ideals. Evil is overcome by love, and let us remember that we must love with the heart of Christ.
“Pope Francis sends the assurance of his spiritual closeness to all those affected by this senseless tragedy. He commends the efforts of those police and emergency services personnel, and offers the promise of his prayers for the injured and for all who have died, entrusting them to the merciful love of almighty God.” -Cardinal Paolin
“At this time, we need to pray and to take care of those who are suffering. In the end, the only response is to do good - for no matter what the darkness, it will never overcome the light. May the Lord of all gentleness surround all those who are suffering from this evil, and for those who have been killed we pray, eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them.” - Cardinal DiNardo of USCCB
