In order for these fruits of the Holy Spirit to shine through us, we need to empty ourselves of our egos, our selfishness, and our pride. St. John of the Cross used an image of sunlight shining through a smudgy window to illustrate this point. Until the smudges are wiped clean, the light cannot illuminate the window completely. Likewise when we are attached to our self-importance and self-love, we are less disposed to cooperate with the promptings of the Holy Spirit.
