Consecration to St. Joseph - Day 8 of Preparation
St. Joseph, Pray for Us.
Fr. Calloway writes that marriage is at the heart of creation and redemption--Adam and Eve were present at the beginning of creation (in the Old Testament), and Joseph and Mary are present at the beginning of God's re-creation (in the New Testament). In fact, Jesus describes the Kingdom of Heaven as a wedding feast. Just as Adam was head of the first covenant family, St. Joseph is the head of the new covenant family.
St. Lawrence of Brindisi wrote to explain St. Joseph's place in Heaven:
"If Christ sits at the right hand of his Father in the glory of paradise above all the choirs of angels, because he is the first of all the predestined and was the holiest of the holiest in this world, and if the Blessed Virgin, by reason of her own holiness, holds the second place after Christ because she is also second by reason of predestination from eternity and grace in time, it seems to me that because Joseph holds the third place after Christ in eternal predestination and grace in time, so by the same reasoning he also holds the third place in the glory of paradise."
Hence St. Joseph has a great influence in Heaven to assist us in our sanctity. St. Thomas Aquinas wrote:
"There are many saints to whom God has given the power to assist us in the necessities of life, but the power given to St. Joseph is unlimited: It extends to all our needs, and all those who invoke him with confidence are sure to be heard."
As our spiritual father, St. Joseph will help us get to the Wedding Feast of Heaven by helping us to acquire the "proper attire"--virtues and holiness through his intercession to Jesus. We are to strive to imitate St. Joseph's virtues in our daily lives.
