Consecration to St. Joseph - Day 15 of Preparation
Head of the Holy Family, Pray for Us
When fathers are called be the "head" of the family does not mean that the father is better than the mother. In fact, Christian marriage calls for mutual reverence and subordination between husband and wife:
Be subordinate to one another out of reverence for Christ. Wives should be subordinate to their husbands as to the Lord. For the husband is head of his wife just as Christ is head of the church, he himself the savior of the body. As the church is subordinate to Christ, so wives should be subordinate to their husbands in everything. Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ loved the church and handed himself over for her to sanctify her, cleansing her by the bath of water with the word, that he might present to himself the church in splendor, without spot or wrinkle or any such thing, that she might be holy and without blemish. (Eph 5:22-33)
As Fr. Calloway points out, the greatest human person who lived on earth was not a man, but a woman - Mary, the Mother of God. However, both Jesus and Mary delighted in the headship of St. Joseph in their home because he was gentle and virtuous father and husband. Husbands and fathers. are to imitate the virtues of St. Joseph in order to truly live out their role as heads of families. They should entrust themselves to St. Joseph so that he may teach them how to humbly, lovingly, and patiently fulfill their roles as husbands and fathers.

O God, who, in your loving providence, chose Blessed Joseph to be the spouse of your most Holy Mother, grant us the favor of having him for our intercessor in heaven whom on earth we venerate as our protector. You, who live and reign forever and ever. Amen.

Remember, O most chaste spouse of the Virgin Mary, that never has it been known that anyone who asked for your help and sought your intercession was left unaided. Full of confidence in your power, I hasten to you, and beg your protection. Listen, O foster-father of the Redeemer, to my humble prayer, and in your goodness hear and answer me. Amen.
